Already in the 19th century, Alexander von Humboldt figured out that in the tropics altitude determines the different ecological zones, much like latitude affects the type of flora and fauna in a global perspective.
This is also true when we talk about birds. If we consider latitude, in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, there are few resident birds, but as we move towards the temperate zones there are more birds and in the tropical belt we find the largest number of birds. Ecuador, is blessed with a privileged location, astride the Equator, but dissected by the high Andes, providing it with a incredibly wide range of micro-climates that extend from the magnificent lush of the tropical rainforests, to the perennial snow-capped summits of the Andes. And what is more: all this is nestled within a reduced area which is two-thirds that of Japan or almost similar to the UK. Therefore, whith over 1600 species of birds, Ecuador offers more bird diversity in less space than any other country in the world.
Speaking of birds, Ecuador can be divided into eight main zones:
Lowlands of the Amazon
Northwestern Lowlands (Choco)
Southwestern Lowlands (Tumbesinian)
Subtropics
Eastern Subtropics
Temperate
Paramo Highlands
Galapagos Islands
Each of these zones offer spectacular birding opportunities that are sure to amaze any birdwatcher.
Currently, we offer programs that cover five of these areas due to the availability of proper accommodation, facilities for observation and ease of logistics.
If you want to see a lot of species in Ecuador, then you must try to visit as many different birding zones as possible, however, if you prefer to watch certain birds closely, or if your interest is in photography, you will better enjoy one or two zones and look for the species unhurriedly.
Birds are experts at hiding and moving around unnoticed, and in the lush vegetation of the tropics birds can be hard to find, especially the rare ones, so we have selected some of the best birding guides in Ecuador to assist our passengers to locate and observe birds.
Each birder has his/her own interests, so we prefer to present the diverse birdwatching locations in Ecuador, so that each passenger can get information about each area. Then, we can arrange interest-specific itineraries that suit our customers interest and budget. Do not hesitate to contact us for personalized suggestions and the best prices. |
